Mark Twain said: “An ecstasy is a thing that will not go into words; it feels like music.” Ahhh…music. What a way to connect to the joy inside of you. Have you ever noticed that some songs make you feel bummed out? Other songs make you feel pensive and reflective? And other songs get you totally pumped up and bring you tremendous joy? It’s pretty cool how that works.
Think about songs that jazz you and fill you up. Write down the ones that come to mind. And make a playlist! It’s amazing how you can be in a blue mood…but then be picked right back up, all because a great song is playing in the background.
A couple years ago, I was working with my coach to determine a “structure” to start my day. Meditating wasn’t working for me. Personal development reading didn’t cut it. “Wait!” I thought. “I LOVE music!” So each day I chose a song that would start my day off on the right foot, so to speak. The one song I couldn’t leave alone was Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” – so I decided to play that one every morning for a while. No matter what mood I woke up in, this song got me rockin’…and smiling. I started a dancing ritual in our living room, and often my husband would join in before he left for work! Too much fun was had by all. 🙂
So think of the music that fills your heart; that makes your spirit soar. And bring it on in to your life…intentionally and deliberately.
Since we’re talking about music, my all-time favorite is Neil Diamond. So, I thought it would be fun to share with you my amazing “full-circle” moment with Neil right here. I hope it makes you smile and brings you a bit of joy!

Every spring when nature comes alive I seem to hear a Van Morrison song on the car radio. Each year when Van’s first song is heard I smile, bob my head all over the place, my arms dance all over in the car and I am reminded that summer is to play, have fun and treasure these short three months. Haven’t had the car radio on so I haven’t heard my annual Van Morrison song…hmm…well, thanks for the reminder cause I got out my five Van Morrison CD’s and listening while doing my chores, laundry and downtime. Loving it!!! Moondance, Tupelo Honey gets my “beat” going but “Days Like These” is a favorite.
How fun! I love Van Morrison but haven’t listened in a long time either.
Hi Ilga! I’m smiling as I’m reading your comment. Thanks for sharing! And fun to know that Van “does it” for you – awesome! My personal fave is “Into the Mystic.” Here’s to smiles, head-bobbing, and dancing arms!
I love this idea. I love music and singing and I should start my day with a favorite song that makes me want to get a move on! Thanks.
Hi Carmen! So happy to know the idea resonates with you…and you already love music and singing. Perfecto! Enjoy gettin’ your “move” on. 🙂
Just curious what some of your favorite songs are:)
This is SO true and I rediscovered music yesterday … and funny how I see this post today! I noticed how good I felt after listening to some music as I painted walls in my house. It was a sort of meditation that made my heart soar … and when I woke up this morning I was mentally singing about Joy, peace and love. What a great way to start the day. Thanks for the inspiration. I will have to keep this one in mind to refer to often!
Hi Joanie! Isn’t it funny how those ‘right’ messages always come at the right time? You are right-on…music is a meditation of sorts. Yep, see what it is that makes you feel good and alive – and bring more of THAT into your life. Cheers to your heart soaring!
Great idea, Michelle! I used to listen to music all the time while cleaning but this is a good idea for starting my day!
Hi Amy! Yes, will be excited to see what you think once you “start” your day this way. It’s a great way to set the mood! Enjoy.
