Last weekend I took my first journey to the gun range by myself. I purchased a gun a few months ago, something I’ve wanted for a long time. People who know me are surprised by this because I’m not the killing type. There was a day when I would have enjoyed a good hunt but I’ve never done it just because the opportunity wasn’t there. Now, I view life differently.

I wanted to gun for target practice…a way to empower myself…to let off some steam…just for me. I took a permit to carry class so I could learn more about safety and the law. It was very eye-opening for me and I will not ever carry a loaded firearm.

So on my way to “empower” myself, I was terrified. I thought this was a strange feeling since it was something I’d wanted to do for so long and chalked it up to first time jitters. What if I loaded it wrong? What if it was too much for me? My stomach was even upset.

As I’m driving down the long windy road to get to the gun range, two fawns catch my attention on the side of the road. I pulled over and sat with them for a moment. I know that the deer carry the energy of gentleness and are often a message to be gentle with ourselves and I was grateful for the message that day.  Here’s one image of one of the deer.

I’m also grateful for the message in my life as a whole.  I tend to beat myself up a lot and that’s not a space I enjoy hanging out in.  As I move into this next phase of my life, I’d like to leave this behind…start fresh…with a sense of gentle grace for myself and others.  Here’s another image…

Here’s more information on deer energy:

Deer’s energy includes gentleness in word, thought and touch. The ability to listen, grace and appreciation for the beauty of balance. Understanding of what’s necessary for survival, power of gratitude and giving, ability to sacrifice for the higher good, connection to the woodland goddess, alternative paths to a goal.  When we move through life in the spirit of love for all beings can we melt the barriers that separate us from others, from other life forms, and from the beautiful mystery which is our own magical and spiritual gift.  – Shamanic Journey
