This week’s prompt is KITCHENS.
When I saw this, my first thought was “say what?”. I had no idea what I would write about kitchens. I don’t spend a lot of time in mine and haven’t in years. I started to visualize “kitchen” and what I saw was a bright kitchen with sunflower yellow walls and white cupboards, some with glass in the doors so I could see the piles of plates that looked like pottery, the matching coffee mugs, bowls and clear, bright glasses.
I saw a blue and white checked tablecloth on the kitchen table, a small table for a cozy cup of coffee (or hot chocolate, in my case) or a quick game of solitaire like my grandma used to play at her kitchen table under the window facing the front yard so she could watch the neighborhood. Yes, back then they didn’t have computers and she actually played with cards. I saw bright windows, also with white woodwork providing a view of the green grass and colorful gardens in the yard.
All of this was so interesting to me because of how little focus I have on kitchens. Maybe it’s because growing up, my father – the perpetual project man (starting, not finishing) – removed all the walls in our kitchen with the intention of redoing it all. Never happened. I don’t think my mom had walls for 10 years in the kitchen. Any time we were in there, we were staring at pipes and wood slats in that old, old house.
Maybe it’s because, after all these years, I still miss my grandma a lot. She died when I was 13 and I’m almost 45. Although I have fond memories of her, I still tear up when I think of not having her here physically by my side even though I know she is around me all the time. She cared for me as an baby and I always felt so close to her. She used her kitchen a lot. She made jams and jelly. She canned. She sewed me clothes and matching doll clothes. She played solitaire, while I watched, at her little kitchen table.
The memories of my grandma are fond ones and, yet, with the busy-ness of life, I don’t think about them much. It was nice to do so today. Maybe it’s also time to create new memories in the kitchen of my dreams, a kitchen that inspires me. One that I want to spend time in. With bright and cheerful yellow walls and white cupboards.
