This is a poetry activity that is sure to get your creativity flowing.

Begin by making a list of your favorite colors. It can be helpful to look at a box of crayons or the following list to help you get started.

Green, lime green, spring green, jade green
Blue, midnight blue, royal blue, baby blue
Yellow, lemon, marigold
Red, maroon, fire engine red,
Orange, red orange

You get the idea next comes the creative part. Think of the colors in different ways and write down your thoughts, the following questions may help you with this part:

  • What does the color sound like?
  • What does the color feel like?
  • What does it look like?
  • What does it smell like?
  • Think of things that are that color
  • What kind of events are that color?
  • What feelings describe that color?

Now you will look at your list of thoughts and put them in an order that pleases you. Add some descriptive words, a thesaurus works well for this part. This activity really makes you think about color in a creative way. My example is below.

Yellow
Yellow is a lemon and a bright sun shining
Yellow is the color that sounds like laughter
Yellow is a feeling of contentment
It is lemon-aid, on hot summer day
Yellow is happiness, bananas and daffodils too

I ask you now what is yellow to you?
